The West Midlands is a metropolitan county and combined authority area in western-central England with a 2014 estimated population of 2,808,356, making it the second most populous county in England after Greater London. For the purposes of the programme, the West Midlands, metropolitan county of central England, consists of seven metropolitan boroughs, Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall and Wolverhampton.
The Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) programme, covers the West Midlands under the remit of the West Midlands Violence Prevention Alliance (WMVPA). The Alliance brings together partners to work together with the shared understanding that violence and its associated harms are preventable, by adopting a public health approach of identifying and addressing root causal factors we can reduce violence and improve health, wellbeing and safety across our population. Alliance members do this through implementing evidence based interventions, as well as testing and evaluating new approaches” MVP is one of the evidence based interventions from Scotland, but is being tested and evaluated to meet the needs of the West Midlands.
MVP trains secondary school students to speak out against all forms of bullying, violence and abusive behaviour and focuses on an innovative ‘bystander’ approach that empowers each student to take an active role in promoting a positive school climate. Within the MVP programme young people are identified not as victims or perpetrators but as empowered bystanders able to support peers and challenge inappropriate behaviour in a safe way. The programme has the potential to improve and reduce rates of exclusions and the occurrence of violent incidents; it can also bring about a change in culture within schools towards a more restorative approach to behaviour and also create a safer and more settled environment. Together with the MVP Programme we aim to begin to create generations of resilient young people, who in turn will become responsible citizens.
